How a Staycation Supports Stewardship

What if staying home could be just as fulfilling as flying across the world?

My Instagram account is currently flooded by pictures of global adventures. This summer I’ve loved seeing my friends travel through Paris, London, Florence…the list is long! Five minutes on Facebook is all it takes to tempt me into booking tickets to some expensive, exotic location.

Here’s the thing: local travel not only saves you money, but also creates meaningful time with loved ones, and strengthens your connection to the local community.

What if I paused to consider the real purpose of travel in this season?

  • Is it to rest and restore what feels depleted?
  • Is it to learn something new or explore a creative hobby?
  • Is it to strengthen relationships?
  • Is it to gain perspective or experience wonder?
  • Is it to escape everyday stress?

When I examine what I hope to experience while traveling, I realize it’s not a two-week international sightseeing adventure. Instead, I’m pulled toward something that lightens my mental load. In this season, I prefer a slower pace with less planning where I can take time away from daily responsibilities.

I want to experience true rest.

Enter the staycation. In 2020, the staycation peaked in popularity when travel restrictions, health concerns, and financial uncertainty kept people close to home. Five years later, it’s clear that international travel is back, but the staycation remains a fantastic option if you value living a life filled with intention and stewardship. And stewardship is about more than just the financial impact of a decision. When you steward something well, it also fosters confidence in purpose, contentment, and peace.

Someday I hope to visit the tulips in the Netherlands, shape pasta at a cooking class in Florence, and snorkel among the coral reefs in St. John. This summer though, I’m looking forward to seeing Anastasia at The Kauffman Center and exploring the current Wildlife exhibit at The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.

I couldn’t be more excited.
