Founder's Story
Matthew J. Syverson, CFP®
“I feel called by God to serve people and to help them be the best stewards possible. We’ve built a team of solid professionals who are all linking arms to serve our clients and their families. Growing this firm is a great accomplishment, and something I never could have done on my own.”
My Story
With a financial planner for a dad and a nurse for a mom, Matt Syverson always knew he wanted to serve people in his career. After graduating from the University of Iowa with a psychology degree and a paramedic certification, Matt served several years in an ambulance on the streets of Tucson and Denver. Inspired in part by his father’s financial planning career, Matt felt called to a shift into the financial services industry back in 2000.
Matt spent his first two years at a larger financial planning company in Denver, and then worked alongside his father in Iowa for another two years. “It was a smaller firm with a Fee-Only approach,” he says. “I learned that, as a Fee-Only advisor, you can look your client in the eye and know that you’re recommending what is in their best interest.”
In 2004, Matt and his wife Tammy, along with their twin baby girls, relocated to Kansas City. “We just knew this was the place where we were supposed to be,” he says. Just weeks after passing his CFP® Certification Examination, Matt opened the doors of Syverson & Company LLC an independent, Fee-Only financial planning firm.
In May 2011, Matt became a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®. As his firm continued to grow and serve generous people, Matt intentionally changed names from Syverson & Company LLC to Sound Stewardship LLC in February 2012. “My heart was to build a business that transcended me. I feel led to continue building a business that gives other like-minded professionals the opportunity to live out their calling and serve clients alongside me.”
Today, as Founder and Senior Financial Advisor, Matt truly enjoys guiding his clients through meaningful financial decisions. “As a financial planner, I have the opportunity to help my clients uncover God’s will for their lives and align their resources to fund it. We’re able to facilitate discussions and decisions about faith, family and finances. From this worldview, we’re able to serve people at a deep level.”
Matt and his wife Tammy were both born and raised in Iowa. They have four children, all of whom are unique in their own way: identical twin girls, a daughter with Down syndrome, and a son adopted from China. Outside of work, Matt enjoys cheering on his children in their endeavors, family adventures in the outdoors with his Jeep, and facilitating men’s Bible studies in the community.
Matt serves as the Secretary/Treasurer at New Horizon Ranch, a volunteer for Unconventional Business Network, and a group leader for Kingdom Advisors in Kansas City.
