Principles in Practice: Give Generously

How can a trailer transform a charity?

Have you ever felt the desire to support your favorite cause, but were concerned about the need to preserve your checking account balance at the same time?  Think about donating non-cash gifts of vehicles, stocks or portions of real estate instead.  Last December, I was pleased to be involved with a non-cash gift of a used horse trailer for a local therapeutic riding ranch, which serves children with disabilities.   A local banker decided that she no longer needed her horse trailer, but it was in disrepair and in need of some serious TLC.  Hearing about this project, one of our generous clients committed to providing the funds to fix the trailer once the banker made the donation.  In fact, our client used appreciated stock to fund her Donor Advised Fund, and then granted out the necessary dollars to do the repair work on the trailer.

Neither donor knew each other, but with our help, they combined efforts in a powerful way to transform the ability of the ranch to “take their show on the road”.  The ranch has found special technicians that will repair the trailer in the near future and the funds that were provided were just the right amount.  What do you have in your backyard or basement that could be repurposed for your favorite cause?
