What Will You Thank Yourself for in 10 Years?

Ten years ago, I made a change that completely shifted the trajectory of my life. I quit my job.
I had become increasingly passionate about the profession of financial planning — not just the numbers, but the way money connects to everything that matters most: the people closest to you, the dreams you hold onto, and even the fears you can’t shake. Helping people be wise with their money is about so much more than dollars and cents. It’s pointing people toward a life of purpose and peace.
But my role 10 years ago was not in financial planning, even though I was already a Certified Financial Planner™. So in 2015, I joined Sound Stewardship. Looking back, I’m profoundly grateful I took that leap. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it.
As you reflect back on 2024, what’s the biggest thing you think you’ll remember in 2034? Turning into the new year, what decision could you make today that future-you will be thankful for?
Is your big thing:
- A health change to make?
- A habit to change?
- A relationship to work on?
- An apology to make?
- A boundary to set?
- A conversation you’ve been avoiding?
- A place to visit?
- A sight to see?
- A trip to plan?
- A financial goal to prioritize?
- A skill to learn?
- A passion project to dedicate time to?
- A fear to confront?
- A career move to make?
- A dream to pursue?
- Clutter to clear (physical or emotional)?
- An influence to eliminate?
- An investment in your spiritual growth to make?
- A volunteer opportunity you feel called to pursue?
I challenge you to pick one intentional step for growth this year. The point is to take action — because choices now ripple far beyond today.
Of course, there are many financial steps you could take. It could be starting that emergency fund, finally creating a will, or having that honest conversation about money with your spouse. You could read a great book. Maybe it’s time to hire a financial planner who can help you align your finances with your values! If you’re looking for ideas, you can review our list of Monthly Financial to-dos. Just select the one item that will have the biggest impact in your life today.
Don’t wait another year to get started. Do the one thing your future self will thank you for. What’s it going to be?
