Helping people has been my whole life. My parents were missionaries and I was raised to help others. From volunteering to working as a paramedic, serving others is part of who I am and part of my life. At Sound Stewardship, I love taking the steps with our clients to help them achieve their goals.

Joel spent the first 30 years of his career as a paramedic. “Helping people has always been a calling for me,” he says. The next stage of his career was sparked in part by a volunteer role at his local church. “I was a budget coach through Crown Financial Ministries and really enjoyed helping families.” He returned to school at Kansas State University and earned his degree in Personal Financial Planning.

While at Kansas State, Joel met the Sound Stewardship team at a financial planning conference. Sound Stewardship’s Fee-Only structure, combined with the firm’s culture and values, instantly attracted Joel. “Even at that point, I thought, this is where I want to work later.” Today, as a financial planner, Joel spends his days meeting with clients, as well as coordinating much of the planning, implementation and preparation.

“I love working at Sound Stewardship because I’ve been able to grow with the firm, and I’m not just a cog in the wheel, so to speak,” Joel smiles. “And by being Fee-Only, I can advise clients on any particular financial situation and make a recommendation that’s really right for them, knowing that none of it will depend on sales. I can be completely objective with the advice that I give.” Joel is particularly proud of earning his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER certification.

Joel and his wife Jenine have three grown sons and two young grandchildren. They are both very involved at Rock Brook Church in Belton on various teams. As a self-taught handyman, he likes making sure everything around his house is in tip-top shape. He worked a wide variety of jobs early in his life — from a butcher to mailman to electrical work and everything in between — which molded him into a do-it-yourself person. “If there’s any way I can do it myself, I will try it. That fits well with our philosophy at Sound Stewardship: we’re going to help our clients any way we can.”
